Q&A with Author Ashley Poston: Returning to the World of Geekerella
When asked about the challenges of revisiting the world she built in Geekerella, Ashley Poston explains that keeping the canon and lore straight was of utmost importance. She was also mindful of not simply rehashing what she had already written, so finding new voices to explore the Starfield fandom proved to be both challenging and exhilarating. Poston is delighted with the two "whip-smart gals" she ended up featuring in her latest work.
Regarding the development of the Starfield universe, Poston shares that she gave it a great deal of thought, drawing inspiration from the science fiction fandoms and communities she grew up immersed in. She wanted to incorporate all the elements she loved about those worlds into her own creation. Poston is flattered when readers inquire whether Starfield is a real franchise, as that is the highest compliment she could receive.
When discussing how fandom and pop culture influence her writing, Poston reveals that she was raised in fandom herself. As such, she enjoys paying homage to her favorite tropes by enthusiastically writing about and celebrating them. She believes that life is too short, and the list of fanfictions she has bookmarked is far too long to not indulge in these passions.
